Analog Devices Inc.
Demonstration circuit 2788A is a boost LED driver featuring the LT®3950. This demonstration circuit powers a string of LEDs at 330mA. The step-up topology can be used to drive a string of up to 28V of LEDs as assembled. The maximum output voltage capability of the LT3950 is 60V. DC2788A runs from an input voltage range of 6V to 24V as built. It also runs at 2MHz and has the capability to turn on spread spectrum frequency modulation (SSFM) for a frequency range of 2.0MHz to 2.5MHz. Dimming control can be achieved with analog dimming or PWM dimming—either from an external or internally-generated clock source. DC2788A features undervoltage lockout (UVLO) set at 6.6V with a 1.0V hysteresis for turn-on. The UVLO voltage, LED current, output voltage range, switching frequency, brightness control, SSFM, and the topology can all be adjusted with simple modifications to the demonstration circuit. LT3950 is a monolithic 1.5A peak switch current, 60V LED driver. The guaranteed peak switch current rating of the IC is 1.5A and this is important to know when calculating maximum output current at a given LED voltage and input voltage for a boost converter. The LT3950 features SSFM and a well-controlled SW node for low emissions. A frequency range of 200kHz to 2MHz and a high-side PWMTG PWM-dimming MOSFET makes this a very versatile IC for many applications. It can be used for boost, buck-boost mode and buck mode LED driver applications. The PWMTG MOSFET not only provides high PWM dimming ratio capability, but it also serves as a short-circuit protection device. The FAULT flag indicates when there is either a short-circuit or open-LED fault at the output. The demo circuit is designed to be easily reconfigured to suit other applications, including the example schematics in the data sheet. Consult technical support for assistance. High voltage operation, 3V input voltage operation, multiple topologies, small-and-compact size, fault protection, low EMI, and multiple brightness control options make the LT3950 flexible and powerful for compact, noise-sensitive LED driver solutions. The LT3950JMSE featured on this demo circuit is available in a thermally enhanced 16-lead plastic MSOP package. The LT3950 data sheet must be read in conjunction with this demo manual to properly use or modify demo circuit DC2788A.

LT3762 60V Synchronous Boost LED Controller

Analog Devices Inc.
Demonstration circuit DC2342A is a 60V synchronous boost LED controller featuring the LT®3762. It drives a single string of LEDs at 2A up to 32V when VIN is between 7V and 28V. It runs down to 4VIN with reduced ILED and can withstand VIN transients as high as 30V. DC2342A runs at approximately 300kHz switching frequency. Spread spectrum frequency modulation (SSFM) can be turned on with a simple jumper, reducing EMI. DC2342A is designed for high power step-up LED controller applications that require excellent efficiency across the VIN range. This demonstration circuit is protected against both open and short LED conditions, each having its own flag. The LT3762 has an input range from 2.5V to 42V. It has an adjustable switching frequency between 100kHz and 1MHz. Enabling SSFM spreads the switching frequency from fSW down to fSW – 30% for reduced EMI. SSFM speed is set by placing a capacitor from the SSFM pin of the LT3762 to ground, and can be disabled by shorting this pin to GND. DC2342A has a simple jumper option to enable/disable spread spectrum frequency modulation. The LT3762 can be PWM dimmed with an external PWM signal, as well as an internally generated PWM signal. A capacitor from PWM to GND of the LT3762 sets the PWM frequency, while the PWM duty cycle is determined by the voltage on the DIM terminal. Between 0V and 3V, VDIM gives between 0.4% and 97% PWM duty cycle. DC2342A has a jumper that can be set to switch between internally generated PWM signal, externally generated PWM signal, and no PWM signal (100% on). When run with both PWM dimming and spread spectrum enabled, the spread spectrum aligns itself with the PWM signal for flicker free operation. DC2342A can also be analog dimmed by placing a voltage source at either of its two CTRL turrets. Small ceramic input and output capacitors are used to save space and cost. The open LED overvoltage protection uses the IC’s constant voltage regulation loop to regulate the output to approximately 35.5V if the LED string is opened, although it may reach almost 40V peak during the transient caused by an open circuit. There is a protection diode from LED+ to GND to prevent negative ringing during a short-circuit. Undervoltage lockout can be adjusted on the circuit with a few simple resistor choices. Further modifications can be made to DC2342A to reconfigure the circuit from a boost topology to operate as a buck-mode or buck-boost mode LED driver. Please consult the factory for details. The LT3762 data sheet gives a complete description of the part, operation and applications information. The data sheet must be read in conjunction with this Demo Manual for demonstration circuit DC2342A. The LT3762EUFD is assembled in a 28-lead plastic 4mm × 5mm QFN package with a thermally enhanced ground pad. Proper board layout is essential for maximum thermal performance. See the data sheet section Layout Considerations.

Demonstration circuit DC2857A is a 36V 2A synchronous 2MHz boost LED driver featuring the LT3922-1. It drives a single string of LEDs at 330mA up to 34V when VIN is between 7V and 28V. It runs down to 4VIN with reduced ILED and can withstand VIN as high as 36V, but has overvoltage lockout (OVLO) set for 28V for this application. DC2857A runs at 2MHz switching frequency. Spread spectrum frequency modulation (SSFM) can be turned on with a simple jumper, reducing EMI. DC2857A comes with low EMI features including optimized layout, SSFM and input EMI filter. It passes CISPR 25 class 5 conducted and radiated EMI. It is protected against both open and short LED conditions and reports the faults. The LT3922-1 has an input voltage range from 2.8V to 36V. Its internal synchronous 2A 40V switches allow up to 34V of LEDs on the output with room for over voltage protection and overshoot during an open LED event. It has adjustable switching frequency between 200kHz and 2.5MHz. It can be synchronized to an external source or programmed with SSFM for low EMI. The PWMTG highside PWM MOSFET driver assists with short-circuit protection and versatility. LT3922-1 can be configured as a boost, boost-buck, or buck mode LED driver and maintain all of its low EMI, PWM dimming, and fault diagnostic features. The LT3922-1 can be PWM dimmed with an external PWM signal or an internally-generated PWM signal. DC2857A has a jumper that can be set to switch between internallygenerated PWM signal, externally-generated PWM signal, and no PWM signal (100% on). It can be analog dimmed with a control voltage on its control pin (CTRL). When run with both PWM dimming and spread spectrum, the spread spectrum aligns itself with the PWM signal for flicker-free operation. Small ceramic input and output capacitors are used to save space and cost. The board is designed with tiny, high frequency capacitors on both sides of the VOUT pins for a reduction in radiated EMI. The open LED overvoltage protection uses the IC’s constant voltage regulation loop to regulate the output to approximately 37.5V if the LED string is opened, although it may reach almost 40V peak during transient from running LEDs to open. There is a protection diode from LED+ to GND to prevent negative ringing during a short-circuit. The output current can be monitored through the ISMON output pin. Undervoltage and overvoltage lockout can be adjusted on the circuit with a few simple resistor choices. There is an EMI filter on the input of DC2857A. Please follow the recommend layout and four-layer thickness of DC2857A for low EMI applications. The LT3922-1 data sheet gives a complete description of the part, operation and applications information. The LT3922EUFD-1 is assembled in a 28-lead plastic 4mm × 5mm QFN package with a thermally enhanced ground pad. Proper board layout is essential for maximum thermal performance.
