MAX8662ETM+T
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX8662/MAX8663 power-management ICs (PMICs) are efficient, compact devices suitable for smart cellular phones, PDAs, Internet appliances, and other portable devices. They integrate two synchronous buck regulators, a boost regulator driving two to seven white LEDs, four low-dropout linear regulators (LDOs), and a linear charger for a single-cell Li-ion (Li+) battery.Maxim's Smart Power Selector™ (SPS) safely distributes power between an external power source (AC adapter, auto adapter, or USB source), battery, and the system load. When system load peaks exceed the external source capability, the battery supplies supplemental current. When system load requirements are small, residual power from the external power source charges the battery. A thermal-limiting circuit limits battery-charge rate and external power-source current to prevent overheating. The PMIC also allows the system to operate with no battery or a discharged battery. The MAX8662 is available in a 6mm x 6mm, 48-pin TQFN package, while the MAX8663, without the LED driver, is available in a 5mm x 5mm, 40-pin TQFN package.Applications3G Smart cellular phonesOther Handheld DevicesPDAs, portable media players (PMPs)Portable GPS Navigation Devices (PNDs)

DS2715BZ+
Analog Devices Inc.
The DS2715 is well suited for cost-sensitive charger applications where the battery pack is either internal or external to the application. It has been optimized for safe and reliable charging of 1 to 10 NiMH cells in series. The internal gain block can be selected as either a comparator or transconductance amplifier for charge current regulation. This makes the DS2715 configurable as a switched DC charger, a linear current regulator, or a switch-mode current source. The DS2715 pre-conditions severely depleted cells before entering full charge mode. It terminates full charge using the dT/dt technique, which requires an external sensing thermistor. Over-temperature, under-temperature, and over-voltage detection prevents charging under unsafe conditions. A user selectable charge timer allows charge rates from 0.167C to 2C. FAST-CHARGE, TOPOFF and DONE modes are included for highly reliable, safe charging of NiMH cells. Discharge mode allows the DS2715 to enter a low power sleep state while the cell pack is being discharged.ApplicationsHandheld GamingHandheld POS TerminalsPortable DVD PlayersPortable Television SetsTest Equipment
LTC4065EDC-4.4#TRMPBF
Analog Devices Inc.
The LTC4065-4.4 is a complete constant-current/constant-voltage linear charger for high capacity single-cell lithium-ion batteries with a 4.4V float voltage. Its 2mm × 2mm DFN package and low external component count make the LTC4065-4.4 especially well-suited for portable applications. Furthermore, LTC4065-4.4 is specifically designed to work within USB power specifications. The CHRG pin indicates when charge current has dropped to ten percent of its programmed value (C/10). An internal timer terminates charging according to battery manufacturer specifications. No external sense resistor or blocking diode is required due to the internal MOSFET architecture. Thermal feedback regulates charge current to limit the die temperature during high power operation or high ambient temperature conditions. When the input supply (wall adapter or USB supply) is removed, the LTC4065-4.4 automatically enters a low current state, dropping battery drain current to less than 1µA. With power applied, LTC4065-4.4 can be put into shutdown mode, reducing the supply current to less than 20µA.The full-featured LTC4065-4.4 also includes automatic recharge, low-battery charge conditioning (trickle charging) and soft-start (to limit inrush current). The LTC4065-4.4 is available in a tiny 6-lead, low profile (0.75mm) 2mm × 2mm DFN package. MAX1870AETJ+
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX1870A step-up/step-down multichemistry battery charger charges with battery voltages above and below the adapter voltage. This highly integrated charger requires a minimum number of external components. The MAX1870A uses a proprietary step-up/stepdown control scheme that provides efficient charging. Analog inputs control charge current and voltage, and can be programmed by the host or hardwired. The MAX1870A accurately charges two to four lithiumion (Li+) series cells at greater than 4A. A programmable input current limit is included, which avoids overloading the AC adapter when supplying the load and the battery charger simultaneously. This reduces the maximum adapter current, which reduces cost. The MAX1870A provides analog outputs to monitor the current drawn from the AC adapter and charge current. A digital output indicates the presence of an AC adapter. When the adapter is removed, the MAX1870A consumes less than 1µA from the battery. The MAX1870A is available in a 32-pin thin QFN (5mm x 5mm) package and is specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. The MAX1870A evaluation kit (MAX1870AEVKIT) is available to help reduce design time.ApplicationsHandheld TerminalsNotebook and Subnotebook Computers

MAX1874ETE+
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX1874 charges a single-cell Li+ battery from both USB and AC adapter sources. It also includes battery-to-input power switchover, so the system can be powered directly from the power source rather than from the battery. In its simplest application, the MAX1874 needs no external MOSFET or diodes, and accepts input voltages up to 6.5V; however, DC input overvoltage protection up to 18V can be added with a single SOT PFET.On-chip thermal limiting simplifies printed circuit board (PCB) layout and allows optimum charging rate without the thermal limits imposed by worst-case battery and input voltage. When the MAX1874 thermal limit is reached, the charger does not shut down but simply reduces charging current.Ambient or battery temperature can be monitored with an external thermistor. When the temperature is out of range, charging pauses.Other features include an active-low CHG output to indicate when battery current tapers below a predetermined level. DC power-OK (active-low DCOK), USB power-OK (active-low UOK), and power-on (PON) outputs indicate when valid power is present. These outputs drive logic or power-selection MOSFETs to disconnect the charging sources from the load and to protect the MAX1874 from overvoltage. The MAX1874 contains no logic for communication with the USB host. It must receive instructions from a local microcontroller. The MAX1874 is available in a 16-pin 5mm x 5mm thin QFN package and operates over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range.ApplicationsCell PhonesDigital CamerasPDAsWireless Appliances

DS2438Z+
Analog Devices Inc.
The DS2438 remains in production, however, for new projects, we recommend ModelGauge m5 MAX17215 fuel gauge. The DS2438 smart battery monitor provides several functions that are desirable to carry in a battery pack: a means of tagging a battery pack with a unique serial number, a direct-to-digital temperature sensor which eliminates the need for thermistors in the battery pack, an A/D converter which measures the battery voltage and current, an integrated current accumulator which keeps a running total of all current going into and out of the battery, an elapsed time meter, and 40 bytes of nonvolatile EEPROM memory for storage of important parameters such as battery chemistry, battery capacity, charging methodology and assembly date. Information is sent to/from the DS2438 over a 1-Wire® interface, so that only one wire (and ground) needs to be connected from a central microprocessor to a DS2438. This means that battery packs need only have three output connectors: battery power, ground, and the 1-Wire interface.Because each DS2438 contains a unique silicon serial number, multiple DS2438s can exist on the same 1-Wire bus. This allows multiple battery packs to be charged or used in the system simultaneously.Applications for the smart battery monitor include portable computers, portable/cellular telephones, and handheld instrumentation battery packs in which it is critical to monitor real-time battery performance. Used in conjunction with a microcontroller in the host system, the DS2438 provides a complete smart battery pack solution that is fully chemistry-independent. The customization for a particular battery chemistry and capacity is realized in the code programmed into the microcontroller and DS2438 EEPROM, and only a software revision is necessary should a designer wish to change battery pack chemistry.ApplicationsCell PhonesDigital Still CamerasDigital Video CamerasPalmtops, Handy Terminals (incl. barcode)Pen Entry Palmtops, PDAs and OrganizersSmart Battery Packs/Chargers
