The AD5204/AD5206 provide 4-/6-channel, 256-position digitally controlled variable resistor (VR) devices. These devices perform the same electronic adjustment function as a potentiometer or variable resistor. Each channel of the AD5204/AD5206 contains a fixed resistor with a wiper contact that taps the fixed resistor value at a point determined by a digital code loaded into the SPI-compatible serial-input register. The resistance between the wiper and either endpoint of the fixed resistor varies linearly with respect to the digital code transferred into the VR latch. The variable resistor offers a completely programmable value of resistance between the A terminal and the wiper or the B terminal and the wiper. The fixed A-to-B terminal resistance of 10 kΩ, 50 kΩ, or 100 kΩ has a nominal temperature coefficient of 700 ppm/°C.Each VR has its own VR latch that holds its programmed resistance value. These VR latches are updated from an internal serial-to-parallel shift register that is loaded from a standard 3-wire serial-input digital interface. Eleven data bits make up the data-word clocked into the serial input register. The ADL5315 is a wide input current range precision high-side current mirror featuring a stable and user-adjustable input voltage. It is optimized for use with PIN photodiodes, but its flexibility and wide operating range make it suitable for a broad array of additional applications. The part provides a compact solution for the common and often challenging problem of interfacing an optical power monitoring device (such as a log amp) to the cathode-side of a PIN photodiode. The ADL5315 mirrors the current at the cathode at a 1:1 ratio over a six-decade range, producing an output exactly proportional to the reference current monitored. Competing optical current monitors have much higher mirror ratios over narrower dynamic ranges, rendering proportional outputs at very low input currents impossible, while discrete solutions are more tedious to implement and may require significantly more board space.

A choice between bandwidth or power dissipation are available as a result of the wide selection of end-to-end terminal resistance values.The AD5220 contains a fixed resistor with a wiper contact that taps the fixed resistor value at a point determined by a digitally controlled UP/DOWN counter. The resistance between the wiper and either end point of the fixed resistor provides a con stant resistance step size that is equal to the end-to-end resistance divided by the number of positions (e.g., RSTEP = 10 kΩ / 128 = 78Ω). The variable resistor offers a true adjustable value of resistance, between the A terminal and the wiper, or the B terminal and the wiper. The fixed A-to-B terminal resistance of 10 kΩ, 50 kΩ, or 100 kΩ has a nominal temperature coefficient of 800 ppm/°C.The chip select CS, count CLK and U/D direction control inputs set the variable resistor position. These inputs that control the internal UP/DOWN counter can be easily generated with mechanical or push button switches (or other contact closure devices). External debounce circuitry is required for the negative-edge sensitive CLK pin. This simple digital interface eliminates the need for microcontrollers in front panel interface designs.The AD5220 is available in both surface mount (SO-8) and the 8-lead plastic DIP package. The AD5222 contains two, 128-position, digitally-controlled variable resistors (VR). This part performs the same electronic adjustment function as a potentiometer, trimmer, or variable resistor. . The fixed A-to-B terminal resistance of 10 K, 50 K, 100 K, or 1 M Ohm has a 1% channel-to-channel matching tolerance with a nominal temperature coefficient of -300 ppm/°C. These products were optimized for portable instrument and test equipment 'push button' applications.The chip select CS, count CLK and U/D direction control inputs set the variable resistor position. A MODE control determines whether both VRs are incremented together or independently. With MODE at logic zero, both wipers are incremented UP or DOWN without changing the relative settings between the wipers. The relative ratio between the wipers is preserved if either wiper reaches the end of the resistor array. In the independent MODE (logic one) only the VR determined by the DACSEL pin is changed.
