MAX6966ATE+
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX6966/MAX6967 serial-interfaced peripheralsprovide microprocessors with 10 I/O ports rated to 7V.Each port can be individually configured as either: A 20mA constant-current LED driver (static or pulsewidthmodulated (PWM)). A 10mA constant-current LED driver (static or PWM). An open-drain logic output. An overvoltage-protected Schmitt logic input.Analog and switching LED intensity control is built in: Individual 8-bit PWM control per output. Individual 1-bit analog control (half/full) per output. Global 3-bit analog control applies to all LED outputs.PWM timing of the 10 port outputs may be optionallystaggered, consecutively phased in 45° increments. This spreads the PWM load currents over time in eightsteps, helping to even out the power-supply currentand reduce the RMS current. The MAX6966/MAX6967 can be configured to awakefrom shutdown on receipt of a minimum 3ms pulse onthe active-low CS input. This hardware-wakeup feature allows apower-management controller or similar ASIC to enablethe MAX6966/MAX6967 with preconfigured LED intensitysettings.Shutdown can be programmed to wait up to 4s, fadedown the sink currents to zero for a period of 1/16s to4s, and then shut down. A similar ramp-up from shutdowncan be programmed for 1/16s to 4s.The MAX6966/MAX6967 support hot insertion. All portpins remain high impedance in power-down (V+ = 0V)with up to 8V asserted on them. The DOUT/OSC pin can be configured as either theserial interface data output or optional PWM clockinput. The MAX6966 powers up defaulting as DOUToutput. The MAX6967 defaults as OSC input. For a similar part without the constant-current controls, refer to the MAX7317 data sheet.ApplicationsCell PhonesKeypad BacklightsLCD BacklightsLED Status IndicationPortable EquipmentRGB LED Drivers

The MAX6968 serial-interfaced LED driver provides eight open-drain, constant-current sinking LED driver outputs rated at 5.5V. The MAX6968 operates from a 3V to 5.5V supply. The MAX6968 supply and the LEDs' supply or supplies may power up in any order. The constant-current outputs are programmed together to up to 55mA using a single external resistor. The MAX6968 operates with a 25Mb, industry-standard, 4-wire serial interface. The MAX6968 uses the industry-standard shift-register-plus-latch-type serial interface. The driver accepts data shifted into an 8-bit shift register using data input DIN and clock input CLK. Input data appears at the output DOUT eight clock cycles later to allow cascading of multiple MAX6968s. The latch-enable input LE loads the 8 bits of shift register data into an 8-bit output latch to set which LEDs are on and which are off. The output-enable input active-low OE gates all eight outputs on and off, and is fast enough to be used as a PWM input for LED intensity control. For applications requiring LED fault detection, refer to the MAX6977 data sheet that automatically detects open-circuit LEDs.For safety-related applications requiring a watchdog timer, refer to the MAX6978 data sheet that includes a fail-safe feature that blanks the display if the serial interface becomes inactive for more than 1s.The MAX6968 is one of a family of 12 shift-register-plus-latch-type LED drivers. The family includes 8-port and 16-port types, with 5.5V- or 36V-rated LED outputs, with and without open-circuit LED detection and watchdog. All versions operate from a 3V to 5.5V supply, and are specified over the -40°C to +125°C temperature range.ApplicationsArchitectural LightingGaming FeaturesMarquee DisplaysPoint-of-Order SignsTraffic SignsVariable Message Signs

The MAX1573 fractional charge pump drives up to four white LEDs with regulated constant current for uniform intensity. By utilizing proprietary adaptive 1x/1.5x modes and ultra-low-dropout current regulators, it maintains the highest possible efficiency over the full 1-cell Li+ battery input voltage range. The 1MHz fixed-frequency switching allows for tiny external components and the regulation scheme is optimized to ensure low EMI and low input ripple. An external resistor sets the full-scale LED current, while two digital inputs control on/off and select amongst three levels of brightness. A pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal can also be used to modulate LED brightness, requiring no additional components. The MAX1573 is available in the tiny chip-scale UCSP™ (4 x 4 grid) and 16-pin thin QFN packages.ApplicationsCell Phones/SmartphonesMP3 PlayersOther Handhelds with Color DisplaysPDAs, Digital Cameras, and Camcorders

The MAX1574 charge pump drives up to three whiteLEDs with regulated constant current for uniform intensity.By utilizing adaptive 1x/2x charge-pump modes andvery-low-dropout current regulators, it achieves 180mAoutput drive capability and high efficiency over the 1-celllithium-battery input voltage range. Fixed-frequency(1MHz) switching allows for tiny external components, and the regulation scheme is optimized to ensure low EMIand low input ripple. The MAX1574 uses an external resistor to set the fullscale100% LED current. An enable input (EN) is used forsimple on/off control or can be pulsed repeatedly to setlower LED current in multiple steps down to 5%. Once thedesired brightness is set, the MAX1574 maintains constantLED current as long as EN is kept high. If EN is keptlow for more than 2ms, the MAX1574 enters shutdown. The MAX1574 is available in a 10-pin 3mm x 3mm TDFNpackage (0.8mm max height).ApplicationsCamera Strobes/Flashes and Movie LightsCell Phones/SmartphonesLCD BacklightsPDAs, Digital Cameras, and Camcorders

The MAX6964 I²C-compatible serial interfaced peripheral provides microprocessors with 17 output ports. Each output is an open-drain current-sinking output rated at 50mA and 7V. The outputs are capable of driving LEDs, or providing logic outputs with external resistive pullup up to 7V.Eight-bit PWM current control is also integrated. Four of the bits are global control and apply to all LED outputs to provide coarse adjustment of current from fully off to fully on with 14 intensity steps. Additionally, each output has an individual 4-bit control, which further divides the globally set current into 16 more steps. Alternatively, the current control can be configured as a single 8-bit control that sets all outputs at once. Each output has independent blink timing with two blink phases. LEDs can be individually set to be either on or off during either blink phase, or to ignore the blink control. The blink period is controlled by an external clock (up to 1kHz) on BLINK or by a register. The BLINK input can also be used as a logic control to turn the LEDs on and off, or as a general-purpose input (GPI). The MAX6964 supports hot insertion. The SDA, SCL, active-low RST, BLINK, and the slave address input ADO remain high impedance in power-down (V+ = 0V) with up to 6V asserted upon them.
