MAX16818ETI+
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX16818 pulse-width modulation (PWM) LED driver controller provides high-output-current capability in a compact package with a minimum number of external components. The MAX16818 is suitable for use in synchronous and nonsynchronous step-down (buck) topologies, as well as in boost, buck-boost, SEPIC, and Cuk LED drivers. The MAX16818 is the first LED driver controller that enables Maxim's technology for fast LED current transients of up to 20A/µs and 30kHz dimming frequency. This device utilizes average-current-mode control that enables optimal use of MOSFETs with optimal charge and on-resistance characteristics. This results in the minimized need for external heatsinking even when delivering up to 30A of LED current. True differential sensing enables accurate control of the LED current. A wide dimming range is easily implemented to accommodate an external PWM signal. An internal regulator enables operation over a wide input voltage range: 4.75V to 5.5V or 7V to 28V and above with a simple external biasing device. The wide switching frequency range, up to 1.5MHz, allows for the use of small inductors and capacitors. The MAX16818 features a clock output with 180° phase delay to control a second out-of-phase LED driver to reduce input and output filter capacitors size or to minimize ripple currents. The MAX16818 offers programmable hiccup, overvoltage, and overtemperature protection. The MAX16818ETE+ is rated for the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) and the MAX16818ATE+ is rated for the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C). This LED driver controller is available in a lead-free, 0.8mm high, 5mm x 5mm 28-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad.ApplicationsFront Projectors/Rear Projection TVsLCD TVs and Display BacklightPortable and Pocket Projectors

MAX16803ATE+
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX16803 current regulator operates from a 6.5V to 40V input-voltage range and delivers up to a total of 350mA to one or more strings of high-brightness LEDs (HB LEDs). The output current of the MAX16803 is adjusted by using an external current-sense resistor in series with the LEDs. A dimming input allows widerange 'pulsed' PWM operation. Wave-shaping circuitry reduces EMI. The differential current-sense input increases noise immunity. The MAX16803 is well suited for applications requiring high-voltage input and is able to withstand automotive load-dump events up to 40V. An on-board pass element minimizes external components while providing ±3.5% output-current accuracy. Additional features include a 5V regulated output and short-circuit and thermal protection. The MAX16803 is available in a thermally enhanced, 5mm x 5mm, 16-pin TQFN package and is specified over the automotive -40°C to +125°C temperature range. The MAX16836 is a newer and more cost effective product; except for different PWM dimming current slew rates, it provides the same performance and is pin-to-pin compatible with the MAX16803.ApplicationsAutomotive Exterior: Rear Combination Lights (RCL)Automotive Interior: Map, Courtesy, and Cluster LightingEmergency Vehicle Warning LightsGeneral LightingNavigation and Marine IndicatorsSignage, Gasoline Canopies, Beacons

Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX6964 I²C-compatible serial interfaced peripheral provides microprocessors with 17 output ports. Each output is an open-drain current-sinking output rated at 50mA and 7V. The outputs are capable of driving LEDs, or providing logic outputs with external resistive pullup up to 7V.Eight-bit PWM current control is also integrated. Four of the bits are global control and apply to all LED outputs to provide coarse adjustment of current from fully off to fully on with 14 intensity steps. Additionally, each output has an individual 4-bit control, which further divides the globally set current into 16 more steps. Alternatively, the current control can be configured as a single 8-bit control that sets all outputs at once. Each output has independent blink timing with two blink phases. LEDs can be individually set to be either on or off during either blink phase, or to ignore the blink control. The blink period is controlled by an external clock (up to 1kHz) on BLINK or by a register. The BLINK input can also be used as a logic control to turn the LEDs on and off, or as a general-purpose input (GPI). The MAX6964 supports hot insertion. The SDA, SCL, active-low RST, BLINK, and the slave address input ADO remain high impedance in power-down (V+ = 0V) with up to 6V asserted upon them. The output ports remain high impedance with up to 8V asserted upon them. The MAX6964 is controlled through a 2-wire I²C serial interface, and can be configured to one of four I²C addresses.ApplicationsKeypad BacklightsLCD BacklightsLED Status IndicationRGB LED Drivers

MAX1698AEUB+T
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX1698 and MAX1698A are efficient drivers forwhite or color LEDs. They are ideal for large LED backlitdisplays in PDAs and laptop computers. Numerousbenefits include greater simplicity, lower cost, higherefficiency, longer bulb life, and greater reliability whencompared to fluorescent (CCFL) and electroluminescent(EL) lamps. The MAX1698/MAX1698A are switch-mode boost controllersin which LED current, rather than output voltage,is regulated The devices drive series-connected LEDswith a controlled current that is measured with a typically15Ω sense resistor, not an expensive fractional-ohm value. LED current control and dimming are accomplishedwith an adjust input (ADJ). For larger light output, multiple LED banks can be connected in parallelwith up to 5W total output power. The MAX1698A has a higher, and more accuratelyspecified, CS current limit than the MAX1698 for higherpowerapplications of 5W or more. Both devices aresupplied in a space-saving 10-pin µMAX package thatoccupies half the space of an 8-pin SO. An evaluationkit (MAX1698EVKIT) is available to speed designs.ApplicationsBacklight for LCD PanelsBattery-Powered Backlight ApplicationsCell PhonesHandy TerminalsPDAs

The MAX6956 compact, serial-interfaced LED display driver/I/O expander provide microprocessors with up to 28 ports. Each port is individually user configurable to either a logic input, logic output, or common-anode (CA) LED constant-current segment driver. Each port configured as an LED segment driver behaves as a digitally controlled constant-current sink, with 16 equal current steps from 1.5mA to 24mA. The LED drivers are suitable for both discrete LEDs and CA numeric and alphanumeric LED digits. Each port configured as a general-purpose I/O (GPIO) can be either a push-pull logic output capable of sinking 10mA and sourcing 4.5mA, or a Schmitt logic input with optional internal pullup. Seven ports feature configurable transition detection logic, which generates an interrupt upon change of port logic level. The MAX6956 is controlled through an I²C-compatible 2-wire serial interface, and uses four-level logic to allow 16 I²C addresses from only 2 select pins. The MAX6956AAX and MAX6956ATL have 28 ports and are available in 36-pin SSOP and 40-pin thin QFN packages, respectively. The MAX6956AAI and MAX6956ANI have 20 ports and are available in 28-pin SSOP and 28-pin DIP packages, respectively. For an SPI-interfaced version, refer to the MAX6957 data sheet. For a lower cost pin-compatible port expander without the constant-current LED drive capability, refer to the MAX7300 data sheet.ApplicationsAutomotiveBar Graph DisplaysIndustrial ControllersPanel MetersSet-Top BoxesSystem MonitoringWhite Goods
