Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX17320 is a 38µA IQ stand-alone pack-side fuel gauge IC with protector, battery internal self-discharge detection, and optional SHA-256 authentication for 2 to 4 series lithium-ion/polymer batteries. The IC monitors the voltage, current, temperature and state of the battery to provide protection against over/undervoltage, overcurrent, short-circuit, over/undertemperature, overcharge, and internal self-discharge conditions using external high-side N-FETs, and provides charging prescription to ensure that the battery operates under safe conditions, thereby prolonging the life of the battery. The IC balances the cells using internal FETs. During prequal charging, the IC uses the CHGFET to linearly control charging. To prevent battery pack cloning, the IC integrates SHA-256 authentication with a 160-bit secret key. Each IC incorporates a unique 64-bit ID.The fuel gauge uses Maxim ModelGauge™ m5 algorithm that combines the short-term accuracy and linearity of a coulomb counter with the long-term stability of a voltage-based fuel gauge to provide industry-leading fuel gauge accuracy. The IC automatically compensates for cell aging, temperature, and discharge rate, and provides accurate state-of-charge (SOC) in milliampere-hours (mAh) or percentage (%) over a wide range of operating conditions. The IC provides a configurable always-on LDO that can power small critical loads on the system side without overloading the cells even under fault conditions. Dynamic power functionality provides the instantaneous maximum battery output power which can be delivered to the system without violating the minimum system input voltage.A Maxim 1-Wire® or 2-wire I2C/SMBus interface provides access to data and control registers. The IC is available in a lead-free, 2.4mm x 2.6mm 30-bump 0.4mm pitch WLP and 4mm x 4mm 24-pin TQFN packages.ApplicationsDigital Still, Video, and Action CamerasHandheld Computers, Radios, and TerminalsMedical Devices, Health and Fitness MonitorsPower Tools, Wireless Speakers, and DronesSmart Batteries and Battery BackupSmartphones, Tablets, and 2-in-1 Laptops

The Himalaya series of voltage regulator ICs, power modules, and chargers enable cooler, smaller, and simpler power supply solutions. The MAX17703 is a high-efficiency, high-voltage, synchronous, step-down, Himalaya Li-ion battery-charger controller designed to operate over an input-voltage range of a 4.5V to 60V. The MAX17703 operates over a wide -40°C to +125°C temperature range and offers a complete charging solution for Li-ion batteries with a ±4% accurate constant current. The output voltage is programmable from 1.25V up to (VDCIN - 2.1V) with ±1% regulation accuracy. The device uses an external nMOSFET to provide input supply-side short-circuit protection, preventing battery discharge. The device charges the battery in constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) states and terminates in a top-up-charge state after the taper timer is elapsed. The device resumes charging automatically when the battery voltage falls below the recharge voltage threshold. Detection and preconditioning of deeply discharged batteries are enabled by a deep discharge detection comparator. The MAX17703 is available in a 24-pin 4mm x 4mm TQFN package with an exposed pad.ApplicationsBattery Backup for Lighting, Security Cameras, and Control PanelsBuilding and Home-Automation Backup PowerIndustrial Battery Charging and Energy StoragePortable Industrial and Medical EquipmentPower Tools and Handheld Terminals

MAX745EAP+T
Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX745 provides all functions necessary for charging lithium-ion (Li+) battery packs. It provides a regulated charging current of up to 4A without getting hot, and a regulated voltage with only ±0.75% total error at the battery terminals. It uses low-cost, 1% resistors to set the output voltage, and a low-cost N-channel MOSFET as the power switch. The MAX745 regulates the voltage set point and charging current using two loops that work together to transition smoothly between voltage and current regulation. The per-cell battery voltage regulation limit is set between 4V and 4.4V using standard 1% resistors, and then the number of cells is set from 1 to 4 by pin-strapping. Total output voltage error is less than ±0.75%.For a similar device with an SMBus™ microcontroller interface and the ability to charge NiCd and NiMH cells, refer to the MAX1647 and MAX1648. For a low-cost Li+ charger using a linear-regulator control scheme, refer to the MAX846A.ApplicationsCell PhonesDesktop Cradle ChargersHandheld Instruments (PDAs, Palmtops)Li+ Battery PacksNotebook Computers

Analog Devices Inc.
The MAX846A is a cost-saving multichemistry battery-charger system that comes in a space-saving 16-pin QSOP. This integrated system allows different battery chemistries (Li-Ion, NiMH or NiCd cells) to be charged using one circuit. In its simplest application, the MAX846A is a stand-alone, current-limited float voltage source that charges Li-Ion cells. It can also be paired up with a low-cost microcontroller (µC) to build a universal charger capable of charging Li-Ion, NiMH, and NiCd cells. An internal 0.5%-accurate reference allows safe charging of Li-Ion cells that require tight voltage accuracy. The voltage- and current-regulation loops used to control a low-cost external PNP transistor (or P-channel MOSFET) are independent of each other, allowing more flexibility in the charging algorithms. The MAX846A has a built-in 1%, 3.3V, 20mA linear regulator capable of powering the µC and providing a reference for the µC's analog-to-digital converters. An on-board reset notifies the controller upon any unexpected loss of power. The µC can be inexpensive, since its only functions are to monitor the voltage and current and to change the charging algorithms.ApplicationsCell PhonesDesktop Cradle ChargersHandheld Instruments (PDAs, Palmtops)Li+ Battery PacksLi+-Ion/NiMH/NiCd Multichemistry Battery ChargersNotebook Computers
