The MAX16126/MAX16127 load-dump/reverse-voltage protection circuits protect power supplies from damaging input voltage conditions, including overvoltage, reverse-voltage, and high-voltage transient pulses. Using a built-in charge pump, the devices control two external back-to-back n-channel MOSFETs that turn off and isolate downstream power supplies during damaging input conditions, such as an automotive load-dump pulse or a reverse-battery condition. Operation is guaranteed down to 3V to ensure proper operation during automotive cold-crank conditions. These devices feature a flag output (active-low FLAG) that asserts during fault conditions.For reverse-voltage protection, external back-to-back MOSFETs outperform the traditional reverse-battery diode, minimizing the voltage drop and power dissipation during normal operation.The MAX16126/MAX16127 use external resistors to adjust the overvoltage and undervoltage comparator thresholds for maximum flexibility.The MAX16127 provides limiter-mode fault management for overvoltage and thermal shutdown conditions; whereas the MAX16126 provides switch-mode fault management for overvoltage and thermal shutdown conditions. In the limiter mode, the output voltage is limited and active-low FLAG is asserted low during a fault. In the switch mode, the external MOSFETs are switched off and active-low FLAG is asserted low after a fault. The switch mode is available in four options: latch mode, 1 autoretry mode, 3 autoretry mode, and always autoretry mode.The MAX16126/MAX16127 are available in 12-pin TQFN packages. The MAX16930/MAX16931 offer two high-voltage, synchronous step-down controllers and a step-up preboost controller. They operate with an input voltage supply from 2V to 42V with preboost active and can operate in drop-out condition by running at 95% duty cycle. The devices are intended for applications with mid- to high-power requirements that operate at a wide input voltage range such as during automotive cold-crank or engine stop-start conditions. The MAX16930/MAX16931 step-down controllers operate 180° out-of-phase at frequencies up to 2.2MHz to allow small external components, reduced output ripple, and to guarantee no AM band interference. The switching frequency is resistor adjustable. The FSYNC input programmability enables three frequency modes for optimized performance: forced fixed-frequency operation, skip mode with ultra-low quiescent current (20µA), and synchronization to an external clock. The devices also provide a spread-spectrum option to minimize EMI interference. The MAX16930/MAX16931 are offered with an asynchronous step-up controller. This preboost circuitry turns on during low input voltage conditions. It is designed to provide power to step-down controller channels with input voltages as low as 2V. The devices also feature a power-OK monitor and overvoltage and undervoltage lockout. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit and thermal shutdown. The MAX17598/MAX17599 low IQ, active clamp current-mode PWM controllers contain all the control circuitry required for the design of wide-input isolated/non-isolated forward-converter industrial power supplies. The MAX17598 is well-suited for universal input (rectified 85V AC to 265V AC) or telecom (36V DC to 72V DC) power supplies. The MAX17599 is optimized for low-voltage industrial supplies (4.5V DC to 36V DC).The devices include an AUX driver that drives an auxiliary MOSFET (clamp switch) that helps implement the active-clamp transformer reset topology for forward converters. Such a reset topology has several advantages including reduced voltage stress on the switches, transformer size reduction due to larger allowable flux swing, and improved efficiency due to elimination of dissipative snubber circuitry. Programmable dead time between the AUX and main driver allows for zero voltage switching (ZVS).The switching frequency is programmable from 100kHz to 1MHz for the devices with an accuracy of ±8% using an external resistor. This allows optimization of the magnetic and filter components, resulting in compact, cost-effective isolated/nonisolated power supplies. For EMI-sensitive applications, the ICs incorporate a programmable frequency-dithering scheme, enabling low-EMI spread-spectrum operation.An input undervoltage lockout (EN/UVLO) is provided for programming input-supply start voltage, and to ensure proper operation during brownout conditions. EN/UVLO input is also used to turn on/off the ICs. Input overvoltage (OVI) protection scheme is provided to make sure that the regulator shuts down when input supply exceeds its maximum allowed value.To control inrush current, the devices incorporate an SS pin to set the soft-start time for the regulators. Power dissipation under fault conditions is minimized by hiccup overcurrent protection (hiccup mode). Soft-stop feature provides safe discharging of the clamp capacitor when the device is turned off, and allows the controller to restart in a well-controlled manner. Additionally, negative current limit is provided in the current-sense circuitry, helping limit clamp switch current under dynamic operating conditions.SYNC feature is provided to synchronize multiple converters to a common external clock in noise-sensitive applications. Overtemperature fault triggers thermal shutdown for reliable protection of the device. The MAX6495–MAX6499 is a family of small, low-current, overvoltage-protection circuits for high-voltage transient systems such as those found in automotive and industrial applications. These devices monitor the input voltage and control an external nMOSFET switch to isolate the load at the output during an input overvoltage condition. The MAX6495–MAX6499 operateover a wide supply voltage range from +5.5V to +72V.The gate of the nMOSFET is driven high while the monitored input is below the user-adjustable overvoltage threshold. An integrated charge-pump circuit provides a 10V gate-to-source voltage to fully enhance the nMOSFET. When the input voltage exceeds the user-adjusted overvoltage threshold, the gate of the MOSFET is quickly pulled low, disconnecting the load from the input. In some applications, disconnecting the output from the load is not desirable. In these cases, the protection circuit can be configured to act as a voltage limiter where the GATE output sawtooths to limit the voltage to the load (MAX6495/MAX6496/MAX6499).The MAX6496 supports lower input voltages and reduces power loss by replacing the external reverse battery diode with an external series pMOSFET. The MAX6496 generates the proper bias voltage to ensure that the pMOSFET is on during normal operations. The gate-to-source voltage is clamped during load-dump conditions, and the p-channel MOSFET is off during reverse-battery conditions.The MAX6497/MAX6498 feature an open-drain, undedicated comparator that notifies the system if the output falls below the programmed threshold. The MAX6497keeps the MOSFET switch latched off until either the input power or the active-low SHDN pin is cycled. The MAX8643 high-efficiency switching regulator delivers up to 3A load current at output voltages from 0.6V to (0.9 × VIN).The IC operates from 2.35V to 3.6V, making it ideal for on-board point-of-load and postregulation applications. Total output error is less than ±1% over load, line, and temperature.The MAX8643 features fixed-frequency PWM mode operation with a switching frequency range of 500kHz to 2MHz set by an external resistor. High-frequencyoperation allows for an all-ceramic capacitor design. The high operating frequency also allows for small-size external components.The low-resistance on-chip nMOS switches ensure high efficiency at heavy loads while minimizing critical inductances, making the layout a much simpler task with respect to discrete solutions. Following a simple layout and footprint ensures first-pass success in new designs.The MAX8643 comes with a high-bandwidth (> 14MHz) voltage-error amplifier. The voltage-mode control architecture and the voltage-error amplifier permit a type III compensation scheme to be utilized to achieve maximum loop bandwidth, up to 20% of the switching frequency. High loop bandwidth provides fast transientresponse, resulting in less required output capacitance and allowing for all-ceramic capacitor designs.The MAX8643 provides two tri-state logic inputs to select one of nine preset output voltages. The preset output voltages allow customers to achieve ±1% output-voltage accuracy without using expensive 0.1% resistors. In addition, the output voltage can be set to any customer value by either using two external resistors at the feedback with 0.6V internal reference orapplying an external reference voltage to the REFIN input.
