The MAX8586 single current-limited switch controls up to 1.2A to power USB applications and has multiple protection features including thermal shutdown, internal current limiting, and reverse current protection. The thermal shutdown limits junction temperature during a prolonged short or overload condition. The internal current-limiting circuitry protects the input supply against overload and is programmable using an external resistor. The MAX8586 meets all IEC specifications for USB ports.The IC latches off when the output experiences a short circuit for more than 20ms, saving system power. Auto-restart tests the shorted output with a 25mA current to determine if the short still exists. Once the short is removed, the MAX8586 automatically restarts the output. An open-drain fault signal notifies the system that the internal current limit has been reached. A 20ms fault-blanking feature allows the circuit to ignore momentary faults such as those caused when hot-swapping into a capacitive load. An ENRESET input is available to disable the auto-restart function.The MAX8586 features a SEL input that programs ON to be either active high or active low. These current-limit switches feature a low 32mΩ (typ) on-resistance and operate from a +2.3V to +5.5V input-voltage range. The current limit is adjustable from 250mA to 2.5A, making these devices ideal for charging a large load capacitor, as well as for high-current load switching applications. Each device in the family handles an overcurrent event differently depending on the option selected. The MAX14575A/MAX14575AL feature an autoretry mode; the MAX14575A has active-high EN polarity, while the MAX14575AL has active-low EN polarity. The MAX14575B has latch-off mode, and the MAX14575C features a continuous current-limit mode. Additional safety features include thermal-shutdown protection to prevent overheating and reverse-current blocking to prevent current from being driven back into the source. The MAX16963 is a high-efficiency, dual synchronous step-down converter that operates with a 2.7V to 5.5V input voltage range and provides a 0.8V to 3.6V output voltage range. The device delivers up to 1.5A of load current per output. The low input/output voltage range and the ability to provide high output currents make this device ideal for on-board point-of-load and postregulation applications. The device achieves ±3% output error over load, line, and temperature ranges. The device features a 2.2MHz fixed-frequency PWM mode for better noise immunity and load transient response, and a skip mode for increased efficiency during light-load operation. The 2.2MHz frequency operation allows for an all-ceramic capacitor design and small-size external components. An optional spread-spectrum frequency modulation minimizes radiated electromagnetic emissions due to the switching frequency. On-board low RDSON switches help minimize efficiency losses at heavy loads and reduce critical/parasitic inductance, making the layout a much simpler task with respect to discrete solutions. Following a simple layout and footprint ensures first-pass success in new designs. The device is offered in a factory-preset output voltage or adjustable output-voltage version (see the Selector Guide in the full data sheet for options). Factory-preset output-voltage versions allow customers to achieve ±3% output-voltage accuracy without using external resistors, while the adjustable output-voltage version provides the flexibility to set the output voltage to any desired value between 0.8V and 3.6V using an external resistive divider.
