The MAX5860 is an integrated, high-density, downstreamcable QAM modulator, digital upconverter (DUC) andRF digital-to-analog converter (RF-DAC). The deviceperforms QAM mapping, pulse shaping and digital RFupconversion of forward-error-correction (FEC) encodeddata with full agility and drives a single RF-port using a14-bit 4.6Gsps DAC. The device digitally synthesizes RFsignals with up to 128 DOCSIS-compliant 6MHz QAMchannels (or up to 96 8MHz QAM channels). The devicehas scalable QAM capacity and provides high-densityQAM modulation with very low power dissipation (45mW/QAM typical) in a compact 12mm x 17mm footprint.The device accepts FEC-encoded CMOS data (symbols)on up to four 10-bit input ports that accept up to 32 time-interleaveddigital data streams each. Each channel featuresan individually configurable QAM mapper, RRC filter,and arbitrary rate resampler (ARR). The device performspulse shaping, resampling, interpolation and quadraturemodulation of input data, supporting all data rates defined inDOCSIS 3.0 and DVB-C. A cascade of interpolation filters,complex modulators, and channel combiners allow modulationof the signal to any frequency from 47MHz to 1006MHz.Integrated direct digital frequency synthesizers allow positioningof the QAM channels with a resolution of 125Hz. Theinterpolation filters and resamplers provide linear phase andexcellent gain flatness.
