The LT4363 surge stopper protects loads from high voltage transients. It regulates the output during an overvoltage event, such as load dump in vehicles, by controlling the gate of an external N-channel MOSFET. The output is limited to a safe value allowing the loads to continue functioning. The LT4363 also monitors the voltage drop between the SNS and OUT pins to protect against overcurrent faults. An internal amplifier limits the voltage across the current sense resistor to 50mV. In either fault condition, a timer is started inversely proportional to MOSFET stress. When VIN exceeds VOUT by more the 2:1, a 2:1 step-down architecture is used to efficiently regulate the output voltage, reducing the input current needed. As VIN reduces below twice VOUT, the LTC3255 will automatically switch to 1:1 mode. The demo board has a 4V to 48V input votlage range and a jumper-selectable output voltage than can be set to 2.5V, 3.3V, 5V, 12V or a user-defined value. The LTC3255 also has an integrated shunt regulator allowing it to provide a regulated output from a 4mA to 20mA current loop.
